Background

 

Still She Rises, Tulsa: A Project of The Bronx Defenders is a community-based defender office that seeks to address the epidemic of criminalization and incarceration of women in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Women are the fastest-growing incarcerated population in the United States, and Oklahoma incarcerates a higher percentage of its women than any other state. For many women, incarceration does not just mean the loss of liberty; it also means the loss of their children and the total destabilization of their family’s lives.

 

Still She Rises, Tulsa seeks to replicate The Bronx Defenders’ holistic model of public defense and is the first pro bono law office in the country specifically dedicated to the representation of mothers who are involved in the criminal justice system. Our organization employs a team of advocates to work alongside attorneys and other key members of a client’s legal team. This interdisciplinary team is designed to provide indigent women and their families with access to client-centered criminal defense, family defense, civil legal services, and social work support. Looking beyond the immediate case, interdisciplinary teams of attorneys and advocates work with each family to understand the factors driving them into the criminal justice system and to mitigate the collateral consequences that may uniquely affect them.

 

Job Description

 

Still She Rises, Tulsa seeks a motivated and dedicated social worker to join the interdisciplinary team of attorneys and advocates as they provide client-centered, holistic services to women and their families. As embedded members of the legal team, the social worker strategizes with attorneys and other advocates to address underlying and collateral consequences of criminal justice involvement and exposure. Using a socioecological framework of analysis, the social worker works closely with individuals charged with criminal and/or juvenile deprived offenses and her attorneys to (1) develop powerful mitigation strategies; (2) provide intensive, client-specific case management; and (3) advocate in and outside of court for client and client’s needs. In this role, the social worker will supervise the Still She Rises, Tulsa client advocates through their various job responsibilities of civil legal and parent advocacy. The social worker will also help train staff on relevant therapeutic modalities, including mental health, substance abuse and trauma-informed practices.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychosocial history investigations, including family and collateral interviews, records requests/analysis, and sociological academic research
  • Write persuasive pre-pleading and/or pre-sentencing mitigation reports, which attorneys will use to advocate for clients in court
  • Advocate for and appear on behalf of clients in criminal and juvenile court, including with judges, ADAs, DHS caseworkers and probation/parole officers
  • Interview clients and conduct assessments identifying needs, strengths and risks
  • Serve as lead advocate for clients in Mental Health Court, Drug Court and alternative-to-incarceration programming
  • Make appropriate referrals as well as continue communication with client and service providers throughout the pendency of cases
  • Meet with various community service providers to cultivate possibilities for client-centered partnerships
  • Provide supportive counseling to clients and their families
  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation
  • Maintain ongoing communication with defense attorney and advocates, and contribute to defense strategy
  • Manage own caseload, including maintain case files, client records, program data
  • Participate in relevant training
  • Provide relevant training to Still She Rises, Tulsa staff regarding mental health, substance abuse, trauma, therapeutic modalities, etc.
  • Supervise client advocates’ work in public benefits, housing, case management and parent advocacy efforts
  • Supervise MSW intern(s) from University of Oklahoma in their field placement(s)

 

Qualifications

  • LMSW, or ability to be licensed within the first 6 months of hire
  • Supervisory experience
  • Preferred minimum of 2 years’ experience as a social worker
  • Strong writing, social and advocacy skills
  • A demonstrated interest working with criminal justice-involved individuals who often have histories of trauma, issues related to substance abuse and mental illness
  • Dedication to and passion for advancing social, gender and racial justice
  • Strong interpersonal skills with individuals from diverse backgrounds and in crisis circumstances
  • Strong administrative skills; ability to multi-task; ability to organize disparate matters effectively
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team-based model
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality within attorney-client privilege
